Understanding Veneer by Position in the Layup

Skateboard veneer is often described by where a sheet is intended to be placed and how its grain runs. These terms help organize a layup, but the actual product specifications should always control.

Face Veneer

Face veneer is selected for an outer surface of the finished laminate. Because it may remain visible, appearance is usually more important than it is for an internal ply. Face sheets may be natural, dyed, stained, printed, clear finished, painted, or covered by another finish.

When selecting a face, consider grain appearance, color, visible marks, sanding allowance, printing method, and whether the surface will be the top or bottom of the deck.

Long-Grain Core Veneer

Long-grain core plies generally run in the lengthwise direction of the deck. They make up much of the laminate structure in many conventional constructions. Core material may allow more visual variation because it is not exposed after pressing and trimming, but structural suitability and bonding surfaces still matter.

Crossband Veneer

Crossband plies have grain oriented across the deck width. They are used to change the directional behavior of the laminate and help tie the long-grain plies together. Crossband sheets must still cover the required mold area after their grain orientation is considered.

Do Not Select by Appearance Alone

An attractive sheet is not automatically the correct sheet for every position. Confirm grain direction, usable dimensions, thickness, grade, and intended application before assembling the layup.

Layup Organization

  • Stack dry sheets in the exact pressing order before mixing adhesive.
  • Mark grain direction and ply number lightly outside the final deck outline.
  • Separate top and bottom faces from internal plies.
  • Confirm that every crossband covers the mold in its rotated orientation.
  • Keep a written layup record for repeat production.

Custom Constructions

Not every deck uses the same number of plies or the same sequence. Longboards, old-school shapes, downhill decks, display decks, furniture components, and experimental laminates may require different materials and engineering. The customer is responsible for validating the final construction for its intended use.
